Why Mental Health Matters: A Physician Turned Coach’s Perspective

October 10th 2026 is Mental Health Awareness Day, a good day to reflect on why mental health matters.

We often speak about mental health as if it is an abstract concept floating somewhere outside our physical selves. We treat it as something to address only when a crisis erupts—when burnout paralyzes us, anxiety peaks, or low mood makes getting out of bed feel like climbing Everest.

My Personal Journey With Mental Health

Throughout my career as a medical doctor and now as an executive life coach, I have worked with hundreds of people navigating life’s struggles. But I know this arena intimately from the inside out, too. For years, I personally struggled with chronic stress, anxiety, and depression. It touched every single part of my life—my energy, my relationships, my confidence, and my physical vitality.   What I discovered through that journey—and what neuroscience consistently reinforces—is that our mental state does not exist in a vacuum.

A Personalized Approach to Mental Wellbeing

Our mental state is constantly evolving, moving on a spectrum from maximum wellness to extreme illness. It is highly responsive to what’s going on inside us and outside.

4 Universal Foundations to Mental health

Our biology and life circumstances are entirely unique, so there is no one-size-fits-all formula.   A sustainable approach must be personalized. However here are the 4 foundational pieces I tell everyone I work with:

  1. Love Your Brain: Your brain is the physical organ controlling your mental health. If your brain is exhausted, inflamed, or nutritionally depleted, your mind will struggle to find clarity, focus, and emotional equilibrium. Before assuming a psychological challenge is purely circumstantial, start with biology. Rule out underlying physical conditions: Schedule regular checkups with your doctor. Systemic issues such as iron deficiency anemia, thyroid disease, vitamin D or B12 deficiencies, and hormone imbalances can directly masquerade as clinical depression, brain fog, and chronic anxiety.   Fuel the engine: Prioritize deep hydration, restorative sleep, movement that boosts blood flow, and whole-food nutrition. When you support the physical brain, emotional resilience naturally follows.
  2. Sharpen Awareness: Mental health challenges rarely happen out of the blue; they build through subtle signals, so we need to increase awareness before the runaway train becomes unstoppable. Notice symptoms like a tightening chest, shallow breathing, irritability over minor inconveniences, or a sudden habit of numbing out on screens are all early indicators of nervous system overwhelm. When we lack awareness, an acute stress reaction quickly turns into an emotional spiral. Practice checking in with yourself throughout the day. By building regular self-awareness, you can name what you are feeling, acknowledge the stressor, and intervene with a calming tool before the cycle takes over.
  3. Build Your Tribe: Lean on Positive Support. We humans are wired for connection. Trying to white-knuckle your way through stress in isolation only reinforces mental fatigue. Surround yourself with people who uplift you and hold space for your growth. This support network might include: Family members who listen without judgment.   Uplifting friends who remind you of who you are outside your stress.   A dedicated life coach to help you build structured action plans and clear mental blocks.   A licensed therapist or counselor when you need a safe harbor to process deep-seated emotional wounds. And of course a psychiatrist if your mental health problems are severe
  4. Design Your Toolkit: Mainstream and Alternative Pathways. Because every individual responds differently, you need a diverse toolkit. Exploring both established and complementary modalities allows you to discover the combination that best supports your nervous system. There are literally thousands of modalities, so you’re going to need to experiment to find what works for you!

Aproaches to Improve Mental Health

Mainstream, Evidence-Based Approaches include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Identifying and reframing automatic negative thinking patterns.
  • Targeted Exercise: Aerobic movement and strength training that elevate endorphins, enhance brain blood flow, and stimulate neuroplasticity.
  • Medical & Pharmacological Support: Working with healthcare professionals when temporary or ongoing medication is appropriate to stabilize brain chemistry.
  • Structured Coaching: Goal setting, accountability, and practical problem-solving to reduce overwhelm.
  • Sleep Hygiene Protocols: Regulating circadian rhythms to restore cognitive clarity and emotional processing.

Complementary & Alternative Approaches:

  • Biofeedback & Neurofeedback: Training heart-rate variability and brainwave coherence to regulate the autonomic nervous system.
  • Mindfulness & Diaphragmatic Breathwork: Slow, purposeful belly breathing to engage the vagus nerve and shift out of fight-or-flight mode.
  • Targeted Nutraceuticals: High-quality omega-3 fatty acids, targeted adaptogens, and gut-microbiome support under qualified guidance.
  • Energy Healing & Restorative Yoga or Qi Gong: Gentle practices that release tension stored deep within the physical body.
  • Expressive Journaling: Daily writing to externalize mental chatter, track emotional triggers, and anchor positive perspectives.

The Bottom Line: Work on your mental health daily. Mental health is not a final destination or a certificate you frame on the wall. It is a daily practice, much like brushing your teeth or fueling your body. Don’t wait for a breakdown to pay attention to your mind. Check in with your body, consult your doctor when something feels off, lean on positive support, and actively tend to your brain health every single day. You deserve to feel vibrant, calm, and fully present in the life you are building.
